Preschool

I'm taking Bret to his future preschool tomorrow for a preview and registration. I am still on the fence about it because of his birthday.....it's one of those right before the Dec 1 deadline. So he can either start kindergarten when he's 4, going on 5 or wait until he's 5, going on 6. Tough choice because he'll either be one of the youngest or one of the oldest in his class.

I think he'd like it....different people, different things to play with/do and it's only for two hours, 2X/week. He's still a bit shy around new people, so that concerns me a bit. I'd hate to leave him crying - that will just break my heart.

I just don't know how I feel about him being in preschool for 3 years. I want him to start kindergarten when he's 5 going on 6 and Jason doesn't agree. We'll see how it goes :)

I'm sure Bret will love preschool. My kids can't wait for me to leave when they go.

My MIL is the principal of an all kindergarten school (and another elementary) and my SIL teaches 1st grade, they both say, especially for boys, it is much better for them to be older. Academically they are usually fine, but socially boys seem to need more time.

That's what I think too. That's why I sort of want to wait until next year to put him into preschool. Maybe a lot will change in 6 months :)

Feel your pain. C is born August 18, and the cut-off for K here in MN is Sept 1. And even that is a tough decision. We've decided to register him for K.

I think that he would love preschool even if he ended up going 3 years. Plus I think you'd have a better feel for if he'd be ready after 2 years in preschool as opposed to just you and Jason disagreeing on it right now :)

Three years in preschool probably wouldn't be bad, especailly since it's only a few hours a week.

I'm a huge proponent of waiting til they're older for kindergarten. I am a Sept. birthday and so is my brother, and my mom waited with both of us...we are the two who had the easiest time with school out of the four of us. Also, all three of my kids are Sept birthdays, and I waited with Ava and am so happy I did, and I will for sure wait with both boys.

My best friend from grade school is a kindergarten teacher, and I had many conversations with her about it before I decided for Ava. She said she always recommends waiting, no matter how advanced they are, then it takes all the 'what-ifs' out of it.

There's my feelings on it, but I do believe whatever parents choose for their kids is what's best for their kids!
